The Year 2005 in Review
2005 -- A year has pass and we are moments away from the New Year of 2006. For many of us, 2005 may be the most memorable year for us while some of them maybe no. A fun year or a year of sadness as one of our most prominent figure, His Holiness John Paul II the Great passes on on the 2nd April 2005 in his Apostalic Palace in Vatican City at 9.37pm (Roman time).

From the tragedies of Hurricane Katrina and the South Asia earthquake to the triumphs of Space Shuttle Discovery and the elections in Iraq, the year 2005 spanned disaster and success. Take a look back at some of the top stories from a tumultuous 12 months.

Tsunami aftermath
In the weeks after the December 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunamis, relief efforts continue as residents try to rebuild lives, homes and livelihoods. The tsunami killed an estimated 179,000 people and destroyed entire towns and villages.

Elections in Iraq
Amid attacks and threats of violence, Iraqis cast their ballots in the first free election the country has seen in a half-century. Iraqis elect a transitional National Assembly, one of the first steps on the path to a permanent government by 2006.

The Schiavo debate
The feeding tube for Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman who became the centerpiece of a national right-to-die battle, is disconnected. Nearly two weeks later, she dies. Her case spurs demonstrations by both sides, such as the protest by the woman above.
VATICAN IN TRANSITIONJohn Paul II died on April 2 at the age of 84, ending a 26-year reign as pope -- one of the longest in the papacy's history. Down-to-earth and charismatic, he visited more world leaders and ordinary people than any of his predecessors. He survived a 1981 assassination attempt, criticized Catholics who questioned the church's teachings, and was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. German-born Pope Benedict XVI, 78, succeeded Pope John Paul II on April 19, becoming the 265th pope.

Prince Charles weds
In a wedding that capped a saga that has spanned more than three decades, Prince Charles weds Camilla Parker Bowles, the woman blamed by many Britons for destroying his marriage to the late Princess Diana.

Michael Jackson not guiltyMichael Jackson is found not guilty of child molestation, conspiracy and alcohol charges by a California jury, capping a two-year legal drama that began after the airing of an unflattering television documentary.
London subway bombings
At the peak of the morning rush hour in London, bombs explode in three crowded subway trains and aboard a bus. At least 52 people die, along with the four bombers, and 700 are injured -- the deadliest attack in Britain since World War II. A commuter snaps this image with his mobile phone as passengers exit an underground train tunnel near King's Cross station.
Space shuttle's return
Discovery successfully roars into orbit in NASA's first shuttle flight since the 2003 Columbia disaster. But after analysis reveals pieces of falling debris (which caused the Columbia tragedy), NASA grounds the shuttle until engineers solve the recurring problem.
Quake strikes South Asia
More than 70,000 people are estimated to have died, with tens of thousands injured, when an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale strikes Pakistan and other parts of South Asia.
Saddam Hussein trial
The trial of Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants begins. They are charged with ordering the killings and torture of more than 140 Iraqis in Dujail in 1982 after an attempt to assassinate Hussein when he was visiting the town.

It leaves many both good and sad memories for me. The joyous one would be my cousin delievered a healthy baby boy in July and the saddest part of my life would be the passing on of our Beloved Pope John Paul II. If you have your 2005 in Review, don't hesitate to share it with me and others.
